When Twilight took off, Hollywood craved the role of Jacob Black. Taylor Lautner earned the part of the werewolf fighting for Bella Swan’s heart, but his journey was far from easy.
After the first Twilight film succeeded, doubts arose about Taylor’s future as Jacob. In the books, Jacob transforms into a muscular werewolf in New Moon. The studio worried that Taylor lacked the right physique and almost recast him. Taylor refused to give up. He began a rigorous training program months in advance to bulk up. His newfound muscle soon became the envy of many.
Taylor faced a grueling audition process. The studio only accepted his transformation after he met with them again, sporting an extra 20–25 pounds of muscle. He had to audition again, and his future as Jacob hung in the balance until two weeks before filming.
Other actors also vied for the role. Twilight author Stephenie Meyer once named Steven Strait as her favorite Jacob, but Strait’s age made him a poor fit. In 2023, Tyler Posey of Teen Wolf fame admitted he came close to winning the role but felt unprepared for the spotlight. Michael Copon also competed, claiming his build better suited the part.
Taylor Lautner’s persistence eventually won the day. He convinced the studio of his commitment and went on to portray the beloved Jacob Black in all five Twilight films. His success cemented his career in Hollywood.
